Research Manager



The Manager of Research provides leadership, supervision and workflow coordination in support of the Research Team, promoting a collaborative team environment, and leading them in implementing departmental initiatives in the areas of user outreach, collection development, technology and applications testing, knowledge management and more.  


  • Oversees the day-to-day management and scheduling of the staff;
  • Provides ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure delivery of high-quality research;
  • Performs legal and non-legal research as needed and provides back-up for research librarians;
  • Monitors timeliness, accuracy, and quality of research as well as ensures well-distributed assignment of requests;
  • Guides research team, as needed, on prioritization of projects and research;
  • Mentors research team in handling all firm research needs including providing point of need assistance and training;
  • Sets priorities and supervises direct reports to ensure both daily and long-range responsibilities and objectives are met;
  • Communicates with attorneys and other firm personnel to ensure information needs are being met and resources are being used efficiently and effectively;
  • Oversees centralized request system, Quest, and provides monthly usage and other reports to management team;
  • Coordinates and manages large research projects from start to finish;
  • Understands the functional, operational and service needs of the department in order to develop and enhance new and existing services;
  • Provides regular reports on research metrics, key takeaways from the data, and recommendations;
  • Supports the Library Leadership with the development and execution of new strategic service recommendations;
  • Coordinates training/onboarding provided by the research team;
  • Participates in research and knowledge management team focusing on client service, strategic planning, staff hiring, training, digital resource and mobile research initiatives;
  • Promotes research & knowledge management services and cost-effective research practice with research tips and pathfinders created by legal information specialists;
  • Meets with vendors and internal stakeholders to evaluate databases and cost-effective usage;
  • Coordinates Lexis, Westlaw and other database training for information specialists;
  • Develops and supervises research courses for legal, corporate and administrative staff;
  • Promotes research and knowledge services to internal stakeholders, end-users, lateral hire litigators, new business development personnel, offering services, tours and orientation materials;
  • Coordinates and develops updates annotated intranet research links for practice groups and administrative departments;
  • Supervises the publication of curated current awareness e-newsletters and alerts, such as the ECB and IP newsletters, emails about eResources topics and descriptions, and/or other marketing and outreach materials aimed at new or existing users;
  • Collaborates with Library Leadership and Information Technology staff to improve databases and tests new technology before rollout to the entire Firm;
  • Contributes to resource and collection development;
  • Works with department leadership on future planning and the strategic provision of information services;
  • Develops and implements marketing and training strategies to promote the department’s services and resources;
  • Keeps abreast of new features and technologies as these changes affect legal information service in consultation with the department leadership;
  • Stays current on news and trends relating to key clients and their markets and proactively distributes findings;
  • Participates in the development of in-depth research training materials for both live and on-demand trainings;
  • Collaborates with Practice Group leadership to ensure group research needs are met and assists in the development and design of Practice Group pages;
  • Supports department leadership with initiatives, as assigned;
  • Coordinates, supervises and participates in rotating weekend coverage;
  • Assists Library Leadership with product testing, evaluation, and ultimately the selection of needed tools and/or cancellation of existing ones, as assigned;
  • Recognizes the value of professional networking and actively participates in professional associations and online communities; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­


  • Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited library school;
  • 7+ years corporate and legal research experience, preferably in a law firm library;
  • 5+ years experience managing staff, preferably in a law firm library;
  • Legal, corporate and general research skills;
  • Experience with Quest or another research monitoring tool;
  • Database searching skills (Lexis, Lexis Advance, Westlaw, WestlawNext, Bloomberg Law, Internet, Dialog, CCH Intelliconnect, OCLC, Pacer, Securities Mosaic, Dun & Bradstreet, etc.);
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to mentor junior librarians and other research & knowledge management staff;
  • Commitment to delivering client service by assisting co-workers;
  • Capable of solving problems and meeting strict deadlines;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and coordinate several activities at one time;
  • Capable of adjusting to change;
  • Equipment used: PC; computer to work at home; Bloomberg Professional Services Terminal; laptop, iPad, scanner, photocopy machine; facsimile; CD player; VCR; headset; compact shelving; printers; and
  • Ability to work additional hours, as needed.
